Sai Mahabhakta Late Shri.Ratanji Shapurji Wadia's name finds a mention in Chapter 14 of holy Shri Sai Satcharitra.

In the city of Nanded, in the Nizam's State, there was a famous Parsi merchant by name Ratanji Shapurji Wadia. He was popular and very pious. He had all the material conforts. He owned Horses, Carriages, Farms and woodlands. He was generous too. The doors of his house were open to all and nobody was turned away empty handed. The world thought that Ratanji was happy. But the pleasure of wealth was of no consequnce for a person who had no son. He was bestowed with twelve daughters. He was constantly worrying about whether God would grant him a virtuous son. This was a nagging anxiety. Because of this Ratanji was always depressed. He could not relish food or drink. He was always grief stricken and was worrying constantly.

As he had immense faith in Das Ganu, he opened his heart to him, who in turn told him to go to Shirdi and his wish would be fulfilled. He said "Go and take Baba's darshan. Bow down at his feet and tell Him your heart's secret at length. He will bless you. Your wellbeing is assured. Baba's deeds are inconceivable. Surrender to Him completely. You will be benifitted".

Accepting Das Ganu's advice, Ratanji took a decision. After some days, he arrived in Shirdi. He went to the Dwarakamai for darshan and prostrated at the feet of Shri Sai Baba. Seeing Sai Maharaj, the store of religious merit, he was overwhelmed with a surge of love for Him. He opened the basket, took out the garland of flowers and lovingly put it around Baba's neck. The fruits he had brought as an offering were placed at Baba's feet.

Ratanji with great humility and highest respect, went and sat near Baba. He poured out his heart to Baba as follows: "Baba, I have heard that whenever people have insurmountable problems, they come to your help and you immediately protect them. Therefore I have come here to meet you, with great hopes and seek a boon at your feet. Please do not turn me away, Maharaja".

Then Baba said to him: "You have taken a long time to come here. Give me whatever Dakshina you wish. Then your objective will be fulfilled". Whoever came for darshan and bowed at His feet, be it a Hindu, Muslim or a Parsi, Baba would ask dakshina from him. Even that was not a small sum. It could be a rupee or two, or fifty or hundred, or even thousand or lakh or even more depending on how much he could afford.

At the time of asking for dakshina from Ratanji, Sai Baba asked for five rupees dakshina, mentioned an instance of the past, which Ratanji could not recall and he was bewildered. Baba said: "you gave me Rupees Three and Fourteen Annas earlier. That I know. Out of the amount intended for Me, give Me only the balance. Give that to Me as dakshina".

This was the first darshan of Baba. Hearing these words of Baba, Ratanji was amazed and tried to recollect. He thought "I have not come to Shirdi before. Nor have I sent anything with anybody". In these circumstances, Ratanji got surprised at Sai Maharaj's words!!!!!

Ratanji was embarassed. He gave the Dakshina and bowed down to Baba but could not resolve the enigma. Ratanji told the reason for his visit to Shirdi. Again he prostrated at Baba's feet and sat with folded hands. With a sense of satisfaction Ratanji told Baba "It is good that my last birth's good deeds have borne fruit and I am able to have darshan of your feet. I am ill-fated, ignorant, and don't know how to perform Puja, rituals, sacrifice. Due to destiny, I have been able to take your darshan, who is the knower of past, present and future. You know the reason for my unhappiness. Oh! Compassionate one, please remove it. Do not send this ardent devotee from your feet".

Sai Baba felt pity for Ratanji He said "do not worry unnecessarily. Your misfortunes, henceforth, will start diminishing". Baba gave him the Udi prasad in his hand and laid his boon-giving hand on his head. "Allah will fulfill your heart's desire". With these words, Baba blessed Ratanji.

Later, Ratanji took His permission to leave and returned to Nanded. He narranted whatever happened in Shirdi to Das Ganu in detail. He said: "I had good darshan, as desired. My heart was full of joy. I have received His boon and assurance and have been blessed. Everything went off fine. But I did not understand one thing. What was it that Maharaj said?. I did not follow it at all".  He told Das Ganu: "Baba told me that He had got Rs.3-14-0 before. Please explain as to what Baba meant by this remark". He said to Das Ganu, "I never went to Shirdi before, and how cold I give Him the sum to which Baba referred?" To Das Ganu also, it was a puzzle, and he pondered much over it for a long time. Some time afterwards it struck him that Ratanji had received some days ago a Mahomedan Saint, by name Moulisaheb (Moulibuva), in his house and had spent some money for his reception. This Moulisaheb was coolie-saint wellknown to the people of Nanded. When Ratanji decided to go the Shirdi, this Moulisaheb accidentally came to Ratanji's house. Ratanji knew him and loved him. So he gave a small party in his honour. Dasganu got from Ratani the yadi or memo of expenses of this reception, and everybody was wonderstruck to see, that the expenses amounted to exactly Rs.3-14-0, nothing more, nothing less. They all came to know, that Baba was omniscient, that thought He lived in Shirdi, He knew what happened outside far away from Shirdi. In fact He knew the past, present and future, and could identify Himself heart and soul with anybody. In this particular instance how could He know the reception given to Moulisaheb, and the amount spent therefore, unless He could identify Himself with him, and be One with him?

Ratanji was satisfied with this explanation and his faith in Baba was confirmed and increased. In due time afterwards, he was blessed with a son and his joy knew no bounds. It is said that he had in all a dozen (12) issues out of which only four survived.
